SMS Gateway: how it works and what to do when it stops

· 6 minutes read

Launching soon. The Calisero Gateway app is not available yet. Create an account and we will email you on launch day.

After installing and pairing, the phone stays connected to Calisero all the time over a secure connection. The messages you send to this device from the API or the dashboard reach the phone in seconds and leave from its SIM card.

The app's screens are in Romanian; the labels below are given in English.

A message's route

In the app, every message has a four-step route, shown in its detail:

  1. Received from the server — the message reached the phone;
  2. Sent to the carrier — the phone handed it to the network, from the chosen card;
  3. Delivered to the recipient — the carrier confirmed delivery;
  4. Status reported to Calisero — the status reached your account.

A failed step is marked in red, with its reason.

The statuses

For sent messages:

  • Queued — the message is waiting on the phone, usually because of the pause between SMS or the daily limit;
  • Sent — handed to the carrier, with no delivery confirmation yet;
  • Delivered — the carrier confirmed the message arrived;
  • Failed — the message could not be sent or delivered; the reason shows next to the status.

For messages received on the card:

  • Forwarded to the server — the SMS reached your account;
  • Waiting for the server — the phone keeps it until the connection is back.

Limits and pause

The phone keeps to the daily limit and the pause between SMS even when several messages arrive at once: the extra ones stay queued and leave in turn. When the limit is reached, the home screen says so, and sending resumes at midnight.

The Active switch on the home screen pauses the gateway without disconnecting it: while it is off, the server sends no messages to this phone.

Nothing gets lost

Messages, received SMS and delivery reports sit in a local queue and are confirmed by the server one by one. If the internet drops, the app is closed or the phone restarts, the queue empties by itself once the connection is back. With Start when the phone restarts on in Settings, the gateway comes back without opening the app.

When the connection drops

The Connection to the server screen shows the status, the latency, the last heartbeat and the history of reconnections. If the server does not answer, the app retries by itself, at growing intervals, and shows what you can check:

  • that the phone has internet, over Wi-Fi or mobile data;
  • the status of the Calisero service;
  • that the Wi-Fi network does not block the connection — try mobile data.

If the message says the session has expired, sign in again. If it says the device was disabled, check the list of devices in the dashboard.

When a permission is revoked

If a required permission is missing — after a system update, for example — the gateway stops and the app shows which permission is missing and the steps to restore it. In the dashboard, the device shows as needing attention. Open the settings from the app, grant the permission and the gateway starts again.

On some phones, battery optimisation closes background apps. If the gateway stops often, check the No battery restrictions row in the app.

Logs and support

The Logs screen keeps the events of the last 7 days, filtered by level: information, warnings and errors. Phone numbers are masked and the text of the SMS is never written to the logs. From the same screen you can export the logs or send them straight to the support team.
